Our Trustees

Karen Mackaness - President of Venture RDA
I joined Wilby RDA in 2017 And helped with the transition to Venture RDA in 2021. I was thrilled to be asked to join RDA as I strongly believe in the enormous benefit children and their families can gain by the power of a relationship with ponies and horses. I personally have been riding since I was 7 years old and still ride now at 77!
I enjoy all sports, either participating or supporting, especially The Saints and of course anything Equine related! I have also supported a lot of other charities fund raising and am very keen to do the same for RDA; the rewards are boundless.

Claire Stuart - Chair of Venture RDA
I am passionate about supporting families and children. I have been involved with RDA since 2007 and have been part of the development of Wilby RDA into Venture RDA since 2021, and Chair since 2023. I have a background in education and supporting families. I am a Northampton Saints supporter.

Kevin Hives - Trustee of Venture RDA
Being a Barnardo child, I feel strongly about building opportunities for children and young people. I have been part of RDA since 2013 and a trustee since 2017. My background has always been in construction since starting work at 17. I have a strong family ethic and my spare time is taken up with armature dramatics and watching my two favourite teams – The Saints and Tottenham Hotspur!

JD Hives - Trustee & Group Secretary
I've been involved with RDA since I was a teenager and became a full-time volunteer after university. I became a trustee and group secretary in 2021. I am passionate about opportunities for all and supporting those around me to fulfil their potential. I look after the family room for our sessions and love meeting our riders and families. I have always worked with children and am an early years specialist. I've had various roles in schools, from 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant, Principal, enrichment lead and am now back in the classroom, working with children again, where I love to be. I have a love of the arts, the outdoors, exploring and all kinds of music!

Karen Vessey - Trustee & Head of Compliance
My RDA journey began in 2015 when I had a few spare hours each week and volunteering seemed like an ideal way of spending time with ponies whilst doing something worthwhile. Venture RDA has certainly fulfilled both of these criteria, and so much more. In 2023 I became a Trustee, with responsibility for compliance which includes ensuring all our volunteers have the required DBS certification. Having spent my working life behind a desk I now enjoy being outdoors whenever possible, either walking in the Northamptonshire countryside and around the British Isles, or in the garden attempting to grow our own fruit and veg.

Wendy Spillane - Trustee & Head of Pony Welfare
I have been involved with horses on and off since the age of 8. In September 2022, after taking early retirement from my role as a Finance Director, I started as a volunteer with Venture RDA. In April 2023 I had the privilege of becoming a Trustee for the Charity and am now responsible for pony welfare. I am an animal lover (dogs & horses in particular). I love music and watching sporting events (mainly rugby & football) and I enjoy camping and the great outdoors.

Sarah Hedgecock - Trustee & Treasurer
I started helping out at RDA on a Saturday morning in 2021 when my daughter Jess began volunteering as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award at school. We both wanted to find something worthwhile to do in our spare time and have loved being involved as the group has grown and developed. As a Chartered Accountant, working in the charity sector – it has been great to be able to volunteer as Treasurer for the group more recently too. I have a tremendous love for horses, so this has been an added bonus – seeing firsthand how they can make a difference in the lives of the amazing children who attend the group.

Krassy Bell - Trustee & Head of Fundraising
I have a background in Corporate Banking and have always had a passion for fundraising and volunteering. I have volunteered for several RDA groups in Northamptonshire over the past 9 years, but it wasn’t until I came across Venture RDA that I found my “home”. I joined Venture RDA in 2023 as a volunteer and in 2024 I was delighted to be invited to join the Board of Trustees to oversee the fundraising aspect of the charity. I love spending time with family, travelling, climbing mountains and watching my favourite rugby team – Northampton Saints.
